Burnaby Fire Fighters Lead the Charge to Eliminate PFAS from Workplaces

Our Burnaby Fire Fighters, deeply committed to the health and safety of their colleagues and community, have taken a significant step forward in the fight against toxic chemicals in the workplace. Recognizing the severe risks posed by 'forever chemicals'—known scientifically as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances)—they have teamed up with MP Peter Julian to bring this crucial issue to the forefront of public and legislative attention.

PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals that have been used in various industries around the world since the 1940s. Unfortunately, these chemicals are incredibly persistent in the environment and human body, meaning they don't break down and can accumulate over time—a troubling reality for those exposed to them regularly, like our fire fighters. These substances have been linked to a variety of health concerns, including cancer, immune system effects, and other serious conditions.

Recognizing the urgent need to protect fire fighters from these harmful substances, our Burnaby Fire Fighters worked diligently alongside MP Peter Julian to develop and present a petition calling for the removal of PFAS from fire fighters' workplaces. This initiative is not just about advocating for the safety of those on the front lines; it’s about ensuring that all fire fighters can do their jobs without fear of long-term health consequences from the very equipment designed to protect them.

By pushing for legislative change, our Burnaby Fire Fighters and MP Julian are not only raising awareness of this critical issue but also paving the way for safer working conditions for fire fighters across the country. Their efforts underscore a broader commitment to environmental health and the well-being of first responders, reflecting the core values of service and protection that define the firefighting profession.

The battle against PFAS is a daunting one, but with the leadership and advocacy of our Burnaby Fire Fighters, supported by MP Julian, there is hope for a safer, healthier future for all those who risk their lives to protect ours.
